Gabriele de Santis
Bluenat Hawayan 2014
Acrylic on marble in artist's frame
16.5 x 25 inches (Each panel: 16.5 x 12.75 inches) 42 x 65 cm
With clever juxtapositions between ancient and ephemeral, Gabriele De Santis’ acrylic on marble works simultaneously liberate and reinvigorate cultural and linguistic conventions. In Bluenat Hawayan, the richly veined marble substrate is overlaid with dual chevrons ‘< >’, transforming the rather lofty classical medium into the wry parenthetical of an emoticon. This minimalist treatment of commonplace typographic elements is a hallmark of the Rome-based artist.
With a forthcoming solo exhibition at Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo in 2016, an upcoming 2015 solo exhibition at MOSTYN in Wales and group shows at MACRO in Rome, Wentrup in Berlin, Centre Pompidou in Paris and the American Academy in Rome, as well as an extensive CV of past exhibitions, De Santis is quickly becoming the most established contemporary Italian artist to emerge in the international market in the past decade. He is represented by Frutta in Rome, Valentin in Paris, and Limoncello in London.
