Breaking down the “visual grammar” of figurative representation, Oliver Osborne’s g............... mirrors the disorienting experience of learning a new language. As with other works in this series, Osborne has taken a cartoon directly from a foreign luanguage textbook, isolating it within the vast planes of the diptych. This juxtaposition results in a new, absurd narrative. Removed from its original, functional context, the silkscreened image becomes humorously menacing, reminding us that context is everything.
Osborne, born in Scotland, currently works in Berlin. He has opened two solo shows this year, at Carl Kostyal (Stockholm) and Catherine Bastide (Brussels) with a forthcoming exhibition at Giò Marconi (Milan). He is represented by Vilma Gold in London.
