Slum 8 2015
Oil on canvas
12 inch diameter (30.5 cm)
Israeli-born Shay Kun takes inspiration from the cognitive lapses we face in recording and reconstructing memory, manipulating aerial images of slums with his virtuosic brand of pop surrealism. Transforming the gritty, hellish landscape of the slum into a decorative abstraction, the artist challenges our perceptions of place and history. Born to parents who survived the Holocaust, Kun’s Slum 9 draws from the greater legacy of this catastrophe.
Kun’s current solo show Nature Does Not Know Extinction; All it Knows Is Transformation opened last week at D&F Contemporary. The New York based artist has been included in group shows at the Shanghai Contemporary Art Museum, Untitled gallery (New York), Fortes Vilaça Gallery (São Paolo), and Lehmann Maupin Gallery (New York).
