Dead, Dead, Dead, Dead 2010
Colored pencil on paper
26 x 18.75 inches (66 x 47.6 cm)
With a list of materials ranging from bubblegum to bird shit, Dan Colen adds irreverent magic to ignored and discarded objects. With the passing of longtime friend and collaborator Dash Snow in 2009, Dead, Dead, Dead, Dead strikes a particularly personal chord. Here, Colen has literally visited the dead, making rubbings from tombstones in a calculated burst of crayola.
With a notable career alongside the so-called Warhol’s Children, a group that included Snow as well as Ryan McGinley, Dan Colen has displayed at major institutions worldwide. Highlights include The Whitney, The Royal Academy (London), National Museum of Art, Architecture and Design (Oslo), and The Brant Foundation. He recently opened solo shows at Venus Over Los Angeles and The Herning Museum of Contemporary Art in Denmark.
Secondary estimate: $16,000.00$ 10,000.00
