Using completely analog means, Austin Lee’s hallucinogenic style explores the often naive and haphazard nature of digital art making. His extroverted palette, in combination with the hazy sfumato of his airbrush, retains the eerie, luminescent quality of iPad drawings or lurid GIFs. As with Mark, the artist blurs traditional notions of figurative representation in a fascinating and strange exploration of line and form.
Lee’s first solo exhibitions last year at Carl Kostyál in London and Postmasters Gallery in New York, where this work was originally displayed, opened to rave reviews from major critics to post-internet artists alike. Since completing his MFA from Yale in 2013, Lee has been included in group shows curated by Wendy White and Marilyn Minter.
