Untitled (Fugue XVIII) 2014
Oil on canvas
78.74 x 70.87 inches (200 x 180 cm)
With its immersive scale, Untitled (Fugue XVIII) draws the viewer into Jean-Baptiste Bernadet’s signature world of music, color, and light. A symphony of stroke and contemplation, his Fugue series has drawn comparison to both Monet’s Nymphéas as well as the work of John Cage. Bernadet intentionally constrains his palette and medium, drawing emphasis instead to the complex and fleeting rhythm of the artist’s touch.
A recipient of numerous accolades including a 2010 residency at the Chinati Foundation, Bernadet's work has been unobtainable on the primary market since mid 2013 and has seen strong support at auction. He is represented by Valentin in Paris, Rod Barton in London, and American Contemporary in New York. Bernadet will have a solo show with Almine Rech in 2016.
Secondary retail value: $60,000.00
