The Contraction of the Prelaté 2013
Oil on canvas
50 x 41.25 inches (127 x 105 cm)
Deeply rooted in classical form and symbolism, Jack McConville’s work blurs private and public representations of the individual. In The Contraction of the Prelaté, bold brushstrokes undulate and waver along the outlines of a nude form trapped within a Matisse-like expanse of blue. Invoking art historical conventions and traditional symbolism, the painter cleverly illustrates the encroachment of technology on the modern psyche.
Born 1984 in Edinburgh, McConville lives and works in Glasgow. He has held residencies at Still House and Studio Voltaire. Recent shows include Ibid (Los Angeles), Tramway (Glasgow), and Departure Gallery (London).
